Discover the Rich History of Hilltop Farm
Hilltop Farm isn't just any farm – it's a living piece of American history. Established in 1913 by George Hendee, co-founder of the iconic Indian Motorcycle Company, this sprawling estate was originally conceived as a gentleman's retirement farm. Hendee, a visionary entrepreneur, poured his passion into creating a self-sustaining haven complete with state-of-the-art dairy operations, lush fields, and elegant outbuildings. The centerpiece is the magnificent 1914 Dairy Barn, often called the "Big White Barn," which stands as a testament to early 20th-century agricultural innovation.
Today, Hilltop Farm is lovingly preserved and managed by the nonprofit Friends of the Farm at Hilltop (FOFAH). Since acquiring the property in 2003, FOFAH has renovated the historic structures and expanded the farm's mission to include 11 acres of core farmstead plus 60 adjacent acres of conserved land leased from the Town of Suffield. Our goal? To revive this historic gem as a vibrant community hub where visitors can learn about sustainable farming, connect with nature, and enjoy hands-on experiences. Open every day of the year from dawn to dusk, the farm offers year-round recreation, but our Annual Open House elevates the experience to new heights, showcasing the property's full potential.
As you wander the grounds, you'll feel the echoes of the past. Imagine Hendee overseeing his prized livestock or strolling along the same paths that now wind through conservation areas teeming with wildlife. This blend of history and modernity makes Hilltop Farm a unique destination – a place where the stories of yesterday inspire the stewards of tomorrow.
A Jam-Packed Schedule of Activities
Our Annual Open House is designed for all ages, ensuring there's something for everyone. Kick off your day with a self-guided tour of the historic farmstead, where you'll marvel at antique agricultural equipment and the beautifully restored Big White Barn.
