Participants can observe a variety of species throughout the seasons.

A Premier Destination For Bird Watching

Hilltop Farm in Suffield, CT, where the Hartford Audubon Society regularly hosts guided bird walks that connect residents with a diverse array of local and migratory birds. This historic farm, once owned by Indian Motorcycle co-founder George Hendee, offers a rich tapestry of habitats that support a thriving avian population, making it an ideal location for both novice and experienced birders.

A Diverse Habitat for Feathered Friends

The unique landscape of Hilltop Farm encompasses several distinct environments, each attracting different species of birds.

  • Wetlands and Inland Pond: A boardwalk with a permanent viewing scope provides a safe distance to observe a long-time resident bald eagle family and other waterfowl. Conservation efforts have helped protect this sensitive nesting area, with public access to the main pathway restricted during the nesting season (February - mid-July).
  • Woodland Trails: Well-established trails wind through the woods, offering opportunities to spot forest dwellers like the Hairy and Red-bellied Woodpeckers, Eastern Wood-Pewees, and Northern Flickers.
  • Fields and Gardens: Open fields and dedicated gardens, including a "Bird and Pollinator Garden," are enhanced with native plantings to attract a variety of species, such as hummingbirds, bluebirds, wrens, American goldfinches, and various warblers and sparrows.

What You Might See

Depending on the season, participants can expect to see a wide range of birds. Common sightings include Gray Catbirds, Northern Cardinals, Blue Jays, and Tree Swallows. Migratory seasons bring opportunities to spot species like bobolinks or northern harriers in the fields, or various warblers along the trails. The variety of habitats ensures a dynamic experience with a rich potential species list, which can be tracked using tools like the eBird app.

Join The Walk

The Hartford Audubon Society organizes these walks to foster a deeper appreciation for local wildlife and the importance of conservation. The events are free, and while binoculars are helpful, they are not strictly required. By joining a guided bird walk, you not only enjoy a peaceful escape into nature but also support the ongoing conservation work that makes Hilltop Farm a vital sanctuary for Connecticut's birds.
